As Monster Hunter’s only living weapon, the Insect Glaive needs some extra TLC.
These key quests are not indicated to you though, if you want to rank up asap you just want to find a guide and focus on completing those quests. If you're doing quests in the village each tier is a star level, if your in the hunter's hub it's your Hunter Rank. Search Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. Hunt 2 before time expires or deliver a Paw Pass Ticket. Mount and topple monster twice: 60HRP: Key. Monster Hunter Generations does not have levels, but they do have ranks. These determine with quests you can take, which also determines which monsters you can hunt for gear. If you want the best gear, you have to keep raising your HR (Hunter Rank) and take on the strongest monsters.
That's because in addition to upgrading its staff, the Insect Glaive set also requires users to feed its other half — a bug called the Kinsect — in order to reach its true potential.
When the Insect Glaive first came out in Monster Hunter 4, however, upgrading its bug was akin to Monster Hunter rocket science. For every stat you boosted via feeding, or example, you downgraded another one, requiring the kind of thought and work that was rarely seen since Monster Hunter Tri allowed you to mix and match Bowgun pieces.

The good news for Monster Hunter Generations, however, is that leveling up the Insect Glaive is now more streamlined. Yes, you still have to feed and level up your Kinsect in addition to the upgrading the staff itself. But things are a lot more straightforward now without requiring as much math with the feeding process like before.
The process currently involves three steps in your “Upgrade Equipment” menu from the Smithy:
- Upgrade Insect Glaive
- Upgrade Kinsect
- Feed Kinsect
The first option is essentially a straightforward weapon upgrade for the staff, requiring a certain set of materials just like other weapons. The last two requires more forethought and tie into each other, affecting whether you have a weapon that emphasizes speed, power, stamina or a more balanced mix of all three. Before you can upgrade your Kinsect, you first need to feed it enough Power, Speed or Heavy Jelly items to level up one of the aforementioned stats three times. Regular Jelly items boost a stat by one point but you can acquire stronger versions (combining a regular Jelly with a Larval Extract, for example, results in “+” version) that can boost stats anywhere from 5 points to a full 10 points, with the latter equating to one whole level boost. You can acquire Jelly from harvest points in the field or via trading with Neko or Chamberlyne as you progress in the game. Ordering Jelly from either cat Trader also can occasionally yields Larval Extract as well. Once you’ve fed a Kinsect enough, all the Jelly items get grayed out and you can now upgrade the Kinsect itself.
Depending on your level and which stats you invest in, you can evolve your Kinsect into different insects. Below is the full set of Kinsects you can aim for and the mats you need to level up your bug based on the official Japanese Monster Hunter X guidebook.

They extend Triple Up duration by 1.5 times from 60 seconds to 90 seconds when you get red, orange and white essence at the same time. It also grants a Wide Range effect when hunting with other Insect Glaive users by sharing essence effects with them. Non-Insect Glaive users also benefit from your green essence. The effects are:
- Red essence: 1 minute, Attack +5
- White essence: 1 minute, Affinity +10
- Orange essence: 1 minute, Defense +5
- Green essence: Recover 15 HP
These bugs also get a 5% increase in Power, Weight and Defense with no penalties.

Now that you’ve completed the 1-star Quests, you should know how everything operates by now, right? You know, you take on a quest, complete it, rinse and repeat, and make sure you manage your items and gear along the way! You’re a pro now. Right? …right?
No?
Well, that’s okay. We’ve got you covered.
This page details all the key quests of this tier. If you want to get to the end of the game, and fast, then just do these and move on. If you want to take your time, that’s great too. But you’ll have to do these eventually!
Rambunctious Rhenoplos
Objective: Slay 5 Rhenoplos
Location: Jurassic Frontier
Subquest: None
Notes: Rhenoplos are these rhino-like monsters that will charge at you even if unprovoked. The in-universe explanation is that they have poor eyesight but really it’s just to piss you off and interrupt your business. So have your revenge by killing five! Rhenoplos are hanging around areas 3 and 6.
Gendrome Roadblock
Objective: Hunt a Gendrome
Location: Dunes
Subquest: Slay 5 Genprey
Notes: This quest will be automatically available from the get-go, and takes place in a new area, the Dunes. Bring Cool Drinks , as the heat will sap your health otherwise. The supply box will provide you with 2. Gendrome is in a similar family to Great Maccao, but has a much simpler attack set. Find him in Area 10 . The subquest should be easy to carry out. Gendrome can paralyze you so beware!
The Land Sharq
Objective: Hunt a Cephadrome
![Monster Monster](/uploads/1/2/6/2/126296138/265313776.png)
Location: Dunes
Subquest: Mount and topple the monster twice
Notes: Another quest in the Dunes introduces you to Cephadrome . Unlike Gendrome and Great Maccao, Cephadrome is a Piscine Wyvern and so will act and behave differently. Cephadrome awaits your challenge in area 7. The box provides you with EZ Sonic Bombs and when Cephadrome is swimming under the sand, throw it to bring him out flopping for you to wail on. If you want to have an easier time mounting, bring an Insect Glaive or use the aerial hunting style.
Hermit Grab
Objective: Slay 5 Hermitaur
Location: Dunes
Subquest: Deliver 3 Apceros Livers
Notes: This is an easier quest that, again, takes place in the Dunes. You can find Hermitaurs, small crab monsters, in areas 2, 3, and 7. Apceros are the herbivores of the Dunes so if you feel like completing the subquest feel free to track them down.
Level 2 Quotes
Completion of these four key quests will lead you to your next Urgent Quest ! Wow, that was fast. Before you challenge this, though, I highly recommend you put together a set of armor from some of the monsters you’ve been hunting, so that you have higher defense. You should have upgraded your weapon once or twice by now as well.
URGENT: Tusk Tantrum
Objective: Hunt a Tetsucabra
Location: Jurassic Frontier
Subquest: Wound Tetsucabra’s jaw
Notes: This is your next large monster, an Amphibian named the Tetsucabra . The Tetsucabra has large tusks and loves to jump all over the place. Be sure to bring Paintballs if you aren’t in the habit already as he will dig to move between areas. Tetsucabra awaits you in area 3 of Jurassic Frontier. One thing to note is that Tetsucabra makes for a great set of armor for Low Rank and so is worth your while to farm.
If you’re wondering about that subquest, aim your weapon at those enormous tusks. If you deal enough damage, you will hear an audible cracking noise, see shards fly off, and lo and behold Tetsucabra’s tusk has been broken! You must do this twice , once to each tusk, for subquest completion.
